Frequently Asked Questions About Coffee Ratio Calculator

How do you calculate coffee from a ratio?

Divide the water weight by the ratio. For 240 g of water at a 1:16 ratio, you need 240 ÷ 16 = 15 g of ground coffee. The calculator does this and also estimates the brewed yield after the grounds absorb some water.

What is the best coffee-to-water ratio?

Around 1:15 to 1:17 suits most palates. 1:15 is strong and intense, 1:16 is balanced, and 1:17 is milder. The widely used industry starting point is 1:18 for large batches, scaled stronger to taste.

Why is the brewed yield less than the water?

Wet coffee grounds hold on to roughly twice their weight in water. The calculator subtracts about twice the coffee weight from the water to estimate what actually lands in your cup.

Does this work for French press and AeroPress?

Yes. The ratio math is the same for any method. French press often runs a little stronger (around 1:15), while AeroPress recipes vary widely — start at 1:16 and adjust.

Is this coffee ratio calculator free?

Yes, completely free with no signup. All maths runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded or tracked.
