Frequently Asked Questions About Lumber Calculator
How do I calculate board feet?
Board feet = (thickness (in) × width (in) × length (ft)) ÷ 12, multiplied by the number of boards. One board foot equals 144 cubic inches of wood. This calculator applies the formula for you.
What is a board foot of lumber?
A board foot is a volume measure equal to 144 cubic inches — imagine a board 12 inches wide, 12 inches long and 1 inch thick. Lumber is priced by the board foot, especially hardwoods.
How many studs do I need for a wall?
Divide the wall length in inches by the on-center spacing (16 or 24 inches) and add one for the end stud. For an 8-foot wall at 16 inch spacing that is (96 ÷ 16) + 1 = 7 studs, plus extra for corners, doors and windows.
Does this work for deck boards and framing?
Yes. Use the board feet section for ordering hardwood or dimensional lumber, and the stud section for wall and floor framing counts at standard 16 or 24 inch spacing.
Is this lumber calculator free?
Yes, completely free with no signup. All maths runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded.
