Frequently Asked Questions About Tile Calculator

How do I calculate how many tiles I need?

Divide the room into rows and columns: tiles across = ceiling(room length ÷ (tile width + gap)) and rows = ceiling(room width ÷ (tile length + gap)). Multiply for the total, then add waste. This calculator does the division and rounds up for you.

How much waste should I add for tile?

Plan on 10–15% extra for straight (grid) layouts and 20–25% for diagonal or herringbone patterns, which create more offcuts. The waste slider lets you match your layout.

Should I include the grout gap?

Yes. The grout gap adds to each tile’s footprint, which changes how many fit per row. Including it gives an accurate count; ignoring it underestimates tiles at the edges.

How much grout and thinset do I need?

As a rule of thumb, one 25 lb bag of grout covers about 100 sq ft of 12-inch tile with a 1/4 inch gap, and a 50 lb bag of thinset covers about 75 sq ft. The calculator gives these estimates for your area.

Is this tile calculator free?

Yes, completely free with no signup. All calculations run in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
